HustlerWorld Interview: Vena Virago
Vena Virago has a commanding presence with her wild fuschia hair and large black framed glasses that I imagine an editor at Vogue would also wear. But right now, she is quietly standing in the corner watching the monitors as some talent are being filmed partaking in anal sex.
Virago was already an established artist before she jumped into the world of dirty movies. Shes been churning out some highly stylized alt porn for a few years now, and we were lucky enough to grab some time out of her busy schedule of directing reverse cowgirls and deep throats to pick her brain a little.
After wrapping the anal scene we headed outside to get away from the musty smell of sex to do the interview. Unfortunately our voice recorder stopped working half way through the interview, but we hope you enjoy this aborted interview none the less.
How did you get into directing porn?
Eon McKai is my friend and has been for a long time. I art directed some of his movies like Art School Sluts and Neu Wave Hookers. I used to work at Babe Net which was connected to VCA, so thats how I was a part of the whole scene.
What is the goal with the movies you are making?
I'm an artist, and I put my art in the movies, and I like building the sets. With this particular movie that I'm working on right now, its about the set and the art show coming together. I put my art in my other movies like East Side Story and Silver Lake Scenesters. With Silver Lake Scenesters it was filmed at my friends house and his art work was in it as well. Also this movie that I'm working on is going to have art work by other people as well.
How would you describe your directing style?
I like scenes where the actors do what they would do naturally. I talk to them allot before the scene, and then let it go. I like that because then you see the personality, especially of the woman come through. I like to make movies that are really female friendly.
Do you see your movies as a type of performance art?
Yes, for me what the performers do in the act of the sex itself is performance art.
Do you see porn and performance art as one in the same?
No. Porn is porn. Art is art. This is porn. Im shooting five positions you know what I mean? Its nice to see a cross over though.
What mainstream work has influenced you?
I really like California art, especially California video art. So Im really influenced by Paul McCarthy and Mike Kelly. I came of age in New York in the 80s, so Keith Harring and modernism. You can see all that in the movies I do.
Where do you see alt porn going?
I don't know, I just make my stuff. People are nice enough to finance it, so I'll keep doing it.
